We do not interview people because of what they do. We interview them because they are interesting.

A musician can be interesting because he builds furniture. A budtender can be interesting because she restores old motorcycles. A retired electrician can have the best record room in the county. A coffee roaster might grow tomatoes, play pedal steel, and know exactly why one chair belongs next to one window.

Start with the room

“Tell me about this room” is a better opener than a résumé question. What is on the shelf? Why that guitar? Who gave you that mug? What record is sitting out? How long has the dog owned that chair?

Five recurring questions

• What is on your table right now?
• What record are you playing tonight?
• What got better as you got older?
• What do you still care about as much as you did at 22?
• What should everybody try once?

The Last Spin

Every Session ends with one album recommendation. Put it on. Let the record start. Fade out. The format can become video, audio, newsletter, and social clips later without changing what makes it good.
