Buy a shirt you will actually wear
Start with a shirt you already like. Lay it flat and measure the chest from side to side, the length from shoulder to hem, and the sleeve. Compare those numbers with the seller's garment measurements. A size letter alone is not enough: two brands' “large” shirts can fit differently.
Check the fabric and the print separately
Read the fabric composition and care label. Consider the weather, how you wash clothes and whether the shirt needs to go into your ordinary laundry. If a print requires a care routine you will not follow, that is part of the buying decision.
Look for photographs of the actual garment and print, rather than relying only on a digital mockup. A mockup can show an idea; it cannot demonstrate stitching, print texture, color accuracy or fit.
Ask four questions before paying
- Does the size chart describe the garment or the wearer's body?
- What is the full delivered cost, including shipping and tax?
- Can you return this item if the fit is wrong, and who pays return shipping?
- Is it made to order, and what delivery estimate applies to your address?
Save the listing and confirmation until the order arrives. Inspect the seams, print and size before removing tags or washing, following the seller's stated return conditions.
The gift version
If the shirt is for someone else, get a measurement from a garment they wear comfortably or choose an option with a clear exchange policy. Keep the receipt. Do not make a guess at a fitted size the centerpiece of a gift if exchanging it will be difficult.
A record, a useful mug or a planned afternoon together can be a better fit than another shirt. Read the gift guide for alternatives, or the listening-room guide for a project you can do with things already at home.
Keep the purchase proportionate
Choose one everyday need: a comfortable weekend shirt, a layer for an evening outside, or a replacement for something worn out. Check what is already in the drawer before ordering. A design you enjoy is a good reason to buy clothing; a fictional urgency timer is not.
